City of Linden
The second-largest town in Guyana and the capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region — a bauxite mining town on the Demerara River.

History
Linden was declared a town in 1970 and is made up of the communities of Mackenzie, Wismar and Christianburg, on the Demerara River. It grew around bauxite: the town's mines run 60 to 90 metres deep, and its identity is bound up with the industry that built it.
The Mackenzie–Wismar bridge and its toll were, for decades, a distinct revenue stream for the Council — around G$6 million a month, more than G$70 million a year. That toll was removed in August 2025, and a further commercial toll was revoked in 2026, together removing roughly G$170 million a year from a council whose operating revenue was estimated at G$90–100 million.
In September 2026 the Government and the Town Council issued a joint statement acknowledging that the Council's audited financial statements are in significant backlog and that the Council 'was not in a position to pronounce on verifiable finances'. Both sides agreed that an examination would establish a clear understanding of revenue and expenditure.
